Stuck in Grimmhold

So as I was walking around the Western Grimmhold dungeon or whatever to unlock the water gates, I entered into a square room. There was a chest in the top left corner of the room, and when I went to unlock it two or three yellow poisonous lizard monsters came out of their cages and attacked me. I killed them off, finished looting the chest, and went to exit out of the room. Funny that there was a gate over the entrance where I first came in. So I walked around, thinking there might be a hidden door or a floor trigger. I can not, for the life of me, figure out whether the game bugged on me and I have to start over again or if there's something I'm not getting. Help?
