Eschalon book 1 exception access violation

I love Eschalon Book 1,2 and 3. However, sense playing Eschalon Book 1 I have encountered a problem in the saving of the game. Now I don't notice it when the game starts off, but when I am about a third of the way through the game I lose all my saves, and I get a message that say's (Windows exception-exception access violation.) I downloaded the game from Basilisk Games, played it on Steam, and GOG and I still get the same problem. Thanks.
