Map Scale

Post by Apopas »

Hi guys,

first post here and I want to say a big thank you for the beautiful moments you offer us through your excellent games.
Looking forward for Book III for these Christmas Holidays!

On topic now, when I play a game, I enter totally in the world. In my try to collect as much lore as possible, I read every book I find in the loots, I read carefully every conversation and I try to guess the vastness of the distances my character explores. A world map is a great tool which aids the player and makes the place to feel familliar.
So while the map that is included in Book II is nice and the scale-square that exists around is very practical, it doesn't say how big it is. Sorry if it is written somewere, but I can't find it.
Second, it would be nice addition if the main roads could be added as well. They will help greatly the overall concept of the distances and they show the level of trade that exists between cities or countries.
Third, any other addition, like ports, ruins etc is welcome ofcourse.

thank you :)

If you go to tactical view (enable it in options or press TAB), you will see a grid of squares. Place the cursor on a square, any square. It tells you how far away that square is from you. A single (1) square is 5 feet way from you, which is about 1,5 metres. A square diagonally adjacent to you is further away from you.

(Squares away) (Straight) (Diagonal)
1 --- 5' --- 7'

2 --- 10' --- 14' 1"

3 --- 15' --- 21' 2"

And so on

According to xolotl's map editor, a single map is 100x100 squares big. That would translate to 250 000 square feet, which is 23 225 m^2 (square metres) = 0,023226 km^2 (square kilometres). That doesn't sound much in real life, but it certainly feels so in the game!

A single one of those red-and-white lines surrounding the map is approx. one map long. As demonstrated earlier, a single map is 100*100 squares = 500*500 feet big.

The distance of Port Kuudad and Raven's Gate East is four maps. 4*500' = 2500' = 762 m. As I said earlier, it doesn't sound much but it feels so thanks to the isometric view. Also, I think the game world is sort of compressed to prevent boredom.

The entire world map is 19 segments wide and 17 segments tall. That would mean:

19*17= 323
323*(500*500=250000) = 80750000 sq ft
80750000 sq ft = 7 501 899 m^2 = 7,5019 km^2

If the maps (game world) were uniformly as large compared to the world map (picture), which they aren't, because late medieval (I think) cartography isn't perfect.

That's logical. So for reality reasons we could scale the world by a margin of 1000.
That means that each line could be about 500*1000 = 500000 ft = 100 miles or 150 kilometers.

Actually, the distance Ravengate-Kuudad is almost 5.5 maps, which means about 550 miles or 825 kilometers. Distance that sounds good

So since the right continent is 15 lines from top to south (land to land), it covers a distance of about 1500 miles or 2250 kilometers. In other words the distance of Australia from north to south or from Portugal to Poland. Not a vast continent but decent nevertheless.

The entire mapped world is 19 segments wide and 17 segments tall as you said. That would mean:
3230000 sq. miles or 8300000 sq. kilometers. Again the size of Oceania.

Now we have a real life model to judge distances :)
