The items will stay there until you come back to reclaim them.
Just be wary of taking items from chests when other people are around to see. If a person sees you taking items out of a chest they'll assume you're stealing that item even if you're the one that put it there in the first place. This goes for drawers as well, and I'll go ahead and assume for caskets.
There are a few quest related exceptions to this that I can think of and this is probably not the case for ALL chests, drawers, or caskets but merely the ones that might be owned by an NPC.
However, I've never noticed anyone complain when I took something out of an open barrel, even while directly in front of them.

Opened barrels in Eschalon are considered "trash cans". No one cares if you rummage through them, even if you happen to find something of value that had been tossed in there.Unclever title wrote:However, I've never noticed anyone complain when I took something out of an open barrel, even while directly in front of them.

Hmmmm... What about sealed barrels then? I could probably make an argument that breaking open a sealed barrel should pretty much look like stealing out of a closed treasure chest to ye average townesperson...BasiliskWrangler wrote:Opened barrels in Eschalon are considered "trash cans". I have smashed the barrel right behind the council house in Aridell, while the council lady was in sight and she didn't care. Anything you stash, whether in a smashed barrel or drawer or chest, it will always be there when you come back to claim it.IJBall wrote:Hmmmm... What about sealed barrels then? Maybe she was too far away to see you. Also, she wasn't looking at your direction... Did she hear you smash the barrel?AK_Marty wrote:I have smashed the barrel right behind the council house in Aridell, while the council lady was in sight and she didn't care. There was nothing in the text box saying she heard a crime being committed.King_ov_Death wrote:Maybe she was too far away to see you. Also, she wasn't looking at your direction... Maybe they think the barrel was full with garbage and you're cleaning it up...

All the sealed barrels I bust open are empty. Rarely has one ever had anything in it for me. So probably the council lady is watching me thinking, "What an idiot! Why's he busting up empty barrels?"

Actually, the sealed barrel on the councilor's patio has fixed loot in it, as do a few others (like the one nearest the well in Elderhollow). Some (like the one out in the wilds between Elderhollow and the Salted Coast) have a pre-set zero loot in them, while many others are completely random (like in Vela near the big Goblin).MyGameCompany wrote:All the sealed barrels I bust open are empty. Things learned from having the patience to reroll a WHOLE lot to save you the trouble.

Yeah, NPCs don't seem to care if you break stuff. There's a sealed barrel behind the counter at the inn in Blackwater. I threw a Demon Oil on it and ran around as it burned and the innkeeper a few tiles away didn't care whatsoever. I then proceeded to throw a demon oil on the locked door to the outside since he didn't like me lockpicking it. Only to find out there is nothing out there. Is there something out there that I'm missing ? Or just some extra graphics on my map ?
Oh, and the guys name in Aridell is Maddock. I remember it because he's the one that taught me that I am not allowed to touch chests in front of people.

Next time use a mace or a sword...

Never a sword. They break too easily. And, as Rutger Hauer said in Ladyhawk, "This sword has been in my family for generations. It has never known disgrace...until now."
Use an axe. Best for splitting things. Or a hammer.
