Gameplay. I thought it was solid, polished and well balanced, especially for an indie product. It's not particularly expansive, but that means you never feel like the mechanics are breaking dwon or you can cheese your way past everything. It's fairly challenging, which is 'just right' for me. Eschalon's appeal is the gameplay, not the story, so it would have been boring if it was too easy. The Taurax were difficult, but that's fine too.
